Renting a roll-off dumpster makes the job incredibly simple, but before you start tossing, it is important to know the local disposal rules. Because we haul in Trumbull, Mahoning, and Mercer counties, our trucks must strictly adhere to Ohio and Pennsylvania landfill regulations. Throwing away prohibited items can lead to safety hazards, environmental damage, or expected sorting fees from the local dump. The Green Light List: What is Allowed
For the vast majority of residential cleanouts and construction projects, almost everything you want to throw away is acceptable. Whether you rent our compact 6-yard or 10-yard dumpsters for a garage cleanout, or our spacious 12-yard, 15-yard, or 20-yard dumpsters for a larger renovation, you can safely toss the following items:
- General Household Junk: clothes, toys, plastic bins, rugs, old documents, and general trash.
- Wooden Furniture: tables, chairs, bed frames, dressers, and wooden shelving.
- Construction & Remodeling Debris: drywall, studs, framing lumber, vinyl siding, floor tiling, and old cabinetry.
- Yard Waste: leaves, branches, brush, grass clippings.
The Red Light List: What is Strictly Prohibited
Federal, state, and local county laws prohibit certain hazardous materials from entering public landfills and transfer stations. As a rule of thumb, if an item is toxic, flammable, corrosive, or contains chemicals, it cannot go into a dumpster.
Please keep these items out of your rental:
- Hazardous Chemicals & Liquids: wet paint (latex paint cans are okay if dried out), motor oil, gasoline, propane tanks, car batteries, and solvents.
- Appliances with Freon: refrigerators, freezers, and air conditioning units cannot be thrown in unless they have been professionally drained.
- Tires: Local transfer stations and landfills charge heavy penalties for tires. These must be recycled at a specialized local facility instead.
- Electronics: old tube televisions, computer monitors, and certain hazardous e-waste require separate recycling.
Quick Tips to Avoid Extra Fees
- Don’t Overfill: Never load debris past the “Max Fill” or rim line of your dumpster rental. If items are sticking out of the top, it is illegal for our drivers to haul it down the highway.
- Ask First: If you are holding an item and wondering, “Can I throw this away?”- just give us a quick call! We are always happy to help!
- Keep the area around the dumpster clear for pickup: If our driver arrives to pick up the dumpster and cannot access it due to a parked car, blocked driveway, or locked gate, we have to reschedule the pickup. This usually results in a failed pickup fee and an additional day fee.

A: Yes, but rules vary by local disposal companies. Some local transfer stations charge extra fees for sorting items containing Freon. A refrigerator is the only household appliance we can not take in our dumpsters.

A: If prohibited items are found in your dumpster, the rental company may refuse to pick it up until you remove the items. Alternatively, they may empty it and charge you a substantial environmental disposal penalties or sorting fees.
Q: How high can you fill a roll-off dumpster?
A: You can only fill a dumpster up to the “max fill” line, keeping all debris completely flush with the top rim. Hauling a dumpster with items piling over the top edges is illegal and unsafe, as items can fly out on the highway during transit.
